The Kickstart Scheme is the creation of new 6-month job placements for young people (aged 16-24-years-old) who are currently on universal credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

Deep Branch is a carbon recycling biotechnology company. We use microbes to convert carbon dioxide from industrial emissions into high-value products. We’re a fast-growing and agile startup with commercial activities both in the UK and the Netherlands. 

As a microbiology technician you will be responsible for efficient running of the laboratory and participating in microbiological research. Duties involved in the placements are: 

  • Preparing growth media
  • Ensuring that the laboratory is kept safe and clean
  • More general microbiology techniques involved in strain development 

Essential skills, experience and qualifications:

Qualifications in any biological science discipline is preferred.  

Experience in a microbiology laboratory is strongly preferred. 


Number of hours per week: 25

Working pattern and contracted hours: Flexible – can be negotiated. But will be within 9am-6pm hours Monday-Friday.


Details of employability support (training opportunities/mentor):

The candidate will gain experience working in a microbiology laboratory. Techniques such as bacterial cultivation, screening, and PCR will be taught. Advice and support will be provided for future opportunities such as post-graduate research or another research scientist role.
